Laurelin Barkel is originally from Michigan. While there she earned her B.A. in Psychology from Hope College, in Holland, MI. She then married her high school sweetheart and moved to Boston to earn her M.S./C.A.G.S. degree in School Psychology from Northeastern University. Within the first few months of relocating to Boston, Laurelin was hired at Boston Partners in Education, where she worked on the Big Cheese Reads program, for two years while completing her degree. While living in Boston, she randomly decided to take on the challenge of a half marathon (having never run more than three miles). She completed her first half in Bar Harbor, ME, raising money for the Girls on the Run program. Since then, the thrill of training and racing has kept her coming back. She has now completed four half marathons and is very excited about her first marathon! Laurelin currently lives in Kansas City, Missouri, and works as a School Psychologist in Olathe schools in Kansas. This year, Laurelin started a running club with elementary students which culminated in a 5K event. Laurelin is very passionate about education, being active, preventing childhood obesity, her dog Avery, and traveling. Her husband, Travis, has worked for State Street for just over three years. |
