Will Muggia is the President and CEO of Westfield Capital Management. He has been a Big Cheese Reader for five years - inspiring Boston's middle-school students to stay in school and follow their dreams. Boston Partners' Communications Manager, Faye Pantazopoulos, asked him to speak about his commitment to the Big Cheese Reads initiative and the students of Boston.
Q: How did you get involved with Boston Partners in Education?
I was initially approached by Boston Partners in Education five years ago, and I thought the Big Cheese Reads was a great way to connect with inner city children. I have always been interested in education and giving back. These kids need more adults and mentors in their lives, so if there is a chance to positively impact them, I am all for it.
Q: What was your first Big Cheese Reads experience like, and what did you get out of it?
I was so inspired the first time I read to a class of 8th graders at Edwards Middle School that I knew I would visit classes every year. The initial one hour reading parlayed into 8th grade classes visiting us for a day at Westfield Capital. Seeing the look on their faces touring a large office building, seeing the trading desk and learning about stocks and bonds was phenomenal. They were all so motivated to do well in school and all commented on their desire to get a great job someday. I loved their energy and enthusiasm.
Q: Share your favorite memory as a Big Cheese Reader.
My favorite memory is reading the letters from the students. One doesn't always realize how much impact you can have on kids' lives. They were so engaged and thankful, that Big Cheese Reads will always be a part of my life.
Q: Would you recommend being a Big Cheese Reader to your friends and colleagues?
I think every CEO in Boston should be required to read and spend time with these incredible students at least once every year!
