TRAINING INFO

Boston Partners in Education conducts trainings for individual volunteers, parents of Boston Public School students, community organizations and university partnerships interested in making a difference in students’ lives.  We draw on our staff of experienced volunteer administrators, licensed teachers, and professional consultants to design and/or conduct training sessions that prepare volunteers to work with students in the Boston Public Schools.  All of our volunteers are required to complete approximately 4 hours of training to prepare for the time spent in the schools with our students. Volunteers are trained in both tutoring and mentoring so that they may become effective academic mentors. Trainings take place at the downtown offices of Boston Partners in Education or at a site more convenient for your group.*

The following is the list of trainings held at our offices:

Mentoring Training:
Volunteers are oriented to Boston Partners in Education and the Boston Public Schools.  They receive interactive training on how to effectively mentor one or more students.

Elementary Literacy and Math:
During the first half of this training, volunteers learn skills in literacy with an emphasis on reading and writing workshops, a vital component of the Boston Public Schools' curriculum. Volunteers are also provided with skills to read aloud to children in groups or one-on-one.

The second half of the training consists of introducing volunteers to the current math curriculum used in the Boston Public Schools, known as Investigations. They practice word problems, view students' work, and play interactive math games in groups. Volunteers are well prepared to help students strengthen their math skills through effective tutoring and support.

Math Initiative:
Boston Partners in Education developed a training especially for math volunteers working on the Math and Literacy Project implemented jointly by Boston Partners in Education and Generations Incorporated. The training for volunteers is very hands-on and interactive, much like the Investigations curriculum used in the Boston Public Schools. Volunteers are prepared to help students strengthen their math skills through effective academic mentoring.

Secondary Literacy:
Volunteers learn about the English Language Arts curriculum and how to effectively tutor middle and high school students to strengthen their reading and writing skills.  This training also focuses on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) due to its important role in students’ educational progress at the high school level.

Secondary Math:
This training teaches volunteers how to effectively tutor students in the different math concept areas.  There is strong focus on the MCAS test since it plays a vital role in students’ education.  Volunteers receive a refresher course on word problems that consist of algebra, geometry, probability, data analysis and other areas.  This portion of the training is highly interactive; group discussion is encouraged.

Customized Trainings:
Trainings for parent groups, corporations, universities, and other community organizations can be arranged.  We take components of the above trainings and create sessions that are shaped to meet your group’s specific needs.

*Please note that trainings are only offered at other locations for groups consisting of 10 participants or more.
